Founder, Director, Boss of the Bean Counters
What is it that you do at KLAS?
I am the #girlboss. I lead a team of exceptional women in finding great solutions for their clients to operate great businesses. I create future leaders of our team along with creating ideas that will save tax and create wealth for clients.
What do you love about your position?
I love that I get to change the future of our clients lives. The challenge is amazing and so rewarding. We can go from looking down the barrel of a large tax debt to having that halved, a new structure and a new plan and direction for a client. We can do so much in tax planning that we can completely transform a person’s business and life. What would you do with a $100k tax saving?
Give us the Scoop on your WHY you do what you do?
I love to inspire people to be a better version of themselves. No I am not running out some Lorna Jane Ribbed T quote I am honestly of the opinion that if you can influence a person to try that 1% harder or be grateful for what they have that is fulfilling. I want my kids to say ‘you are my idol’ I want my team to say ‘I want to be like you’ and I want my family to say they are proud of what we have created. I want a legacy that says I made a difference to someone’s life and because of me they are successful.
What is the most ‘Kooki’ or ‘fun’ activity you do at KLAS, I hear you have an ‘email-a-thon’ Monday mornings on the weekends events and that Tenterfield close early for Family time Fridays, what’s your favourite KLAS habit?
Where do I start – can I even answer this because the Kooki ideas are from my ‘think tank’. OK – so I love that daily my goals are on my desk and I look at these, I have a visual and I know what I want. I love that when I have achieved something great I put it in my achievement jar to share with my team, myself or just to give me more energy when I am lacking that. I love that I look at a quote on my office wall daily that says ‘For success attitude is equally important as ability’ and I remind myself that attitude is EVERYTHING, I love that we are socially conscious and raise money and awareness for charities and organisations regularly like our weekly casual days for Tenterfield Cancer Support and the Rescue Helicopter. I love that we are true to our vision in improving the lives of our clients and at every completion of every job we are looking at how we can bring something new to the mix to improve the outcome of the client. I love that If the office or an individual is having a bad day we skip – yep I tell no lie here, I make the whole office skip around – you can’t have the shits when you are skipping. I love that we are like family and have as much respect for one another as we do our own flesh and blood. I love we have a private chat via messenger and share our lives – “I just finished a week of washing, high five to that sister”, but the best and final (because we don’t have all day) I love the love we share for our clients – that is something you cannot pay for, a mutual respect and genuine interest in their outcomes.
What do you love most about working at KLAS?
My team, honestly there is not a group of people I would rather spend the biggest part of my life with. I also love seeing what we create. A strategy is nothing until it is played out. To see the savings and see the end result, that is rewarding.
What has been your biggest lesson whilst at KLAS?
There are so many! Trust your instincts, this has been massive for me. And my second biggest lesson - Your team are everything. As Richard Branson Says ‘if you take care of your employees they will take care of the clients’
Who or what brand are you inspired by and why?
Oh Gosh! This list is massive. Richard Branson is a big inspiration for me. He is such a risk taker, so cheeky in his approach and so humble in all that he achieves. He is the first to admit he is a dislexic kid that didn’t know when to quit but he is one of the most successful and influential business people of our time with nothing but common sense and a will to succeed in his list of qualifications. Emma Isaacs is another of my all time inspirations. She too lives a life of experience and openly admits that university was never going to get her to her goals, experience would. She is the ultimate #girlboss, she has 5 children a hugely successful female networking and events business and is an inspiration to all business women. She is authentic and real in all her dealings and has made a huge empire for herself on trusting her gut.
What is your favourite quote?
The person that wrote this question needs a stick in the eye – just one is never going to happen (did I write this question, hang on it was me!!)
We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give – Winston Churchill
If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes then learn how to do it later – Richard Branson
Life is not happening to you it is happening for you – Tony Robbins
If you can’t you must – Tony Robbins
People don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it, and what you do simply proves what you believe – Simon Sinek
Leadership is a choice, it is not a rank – Simon Sinek
Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life
How do you spend your time when you are not at KLAS?
I chase around two smaller versions of myself. Reagan is 9 and she is going to be an exceptional leader one day based on her current status as ‘bossy’ and Beau is going to be the relaxed type that isn’t afraid to voice his concerns on the state of play and how it could be done better. My two children are my world and along with their father Ben are the balance in my life. I love being behind a camera, but do not spend enough time currently doing this (insert wish list or 2019 resolutions) and I love having down time with my family at the farm, fishing, shooting and driving around the property, I am also OBSESSED with the beach – it is my happy place and where all my balance happens. There is NOTHING salt water cannot fix!. I love to connect and I feel empty when I am not spending time with people. My family including my parents and siblings are a very important part of my life and I love to organise (yep – organise, what a surprise) outings and events for us to spend time together. That’s my next love – organising events, inspiration events to be exact so watch this space!
What are you most grateful for?
My children and my husband. At 21 I was told I would not be able to have children. Imagine my surprise when 2 days before my wedding (At age 28) the receptionist at my doctors surgery rings and tells me my pregnancy test are positive. Then Imagine her surprise when I tell her I’m too busy to take this in and she best call me next week. I am so blessed to have happy and healthy children and when I look at the world around me and what my friends and associates have to endure to have families I am just so blessed to have my health and my family. A dear friend of mine passed in October 2016 and I lost a piece of myself and a true soulmate. We could talk for hours on how to best run a business and what we wanted to change in the world but at the end of the day you can’t buy your health and she has forever reminded me to be grateful for what we have here and now – you don’t get a second chance at most things so make sure you enjoy it! My husband Ben is such an amazing person and has the wisdom of a person well above his years. He keeps me balanced and supports me in everything I do and that support is something so many do not have. I would not be where I am today without him.
What is your ideal Holiday?
To be honest, and it sounds too simple, I love to spend time with my family at Salt. My kids love it there, they are so familiar and we love to take time out there. If I were to design the perfect holiday it would be travelling overseas, where my kids would learn to push out of their comfort zone and to experience new things. It wasn’t until I went to Vegas a few years ago that I truly appreciated how important it is to travel and remove yourself from your comfort zone to truly experience new things and a different perspective of life (might I say, Vegas is just the place to learn that!) But I think a dream holiday would be Necker island – Yes with Richard Branson, surrounding myself with the best of be the best. Before that though a relaxing get away with the family to an island full of massages and quality time and no phones! I would also love a trip to Canada and also a trip to Africa. The list is long….
How do you like your coffee?
I don’t drink it, I am hypo enough and struggle to sleep when i have coffee but when i choose to pretend its a Chai Latte on Almond Milk.
Is there anything else you would love to share about KLAS that the world needs to know?
KLAS truly is not like most accounting firms. I am not saying that because I own it. We truly think outside the box and we truly go that extra mile. I cannot quantify the amount of money we have saved nor the amount of time we have saved clients, stress we have reduced and the overall assistance we give to clients. On top of that we are an obsessive compulsive bunch so things need to be done pretty particular. Jobs go through 2 accountants then to myself before they go out so there are 3 sets of eyes for accuracy but the best part is there are 3 sets of eyes for improvements and new strategy. This is so effective in creating new ideas. The team are naturally competitive, as Aussies we are born that way, so we need to ensure we have the best idea and they are better than our collegues!! And it is brilliant – its breeds such great work.
